Gallery C presents
(held space) by Caprice McNeill
Flowers have long spoken in a language older than words—symbols of impermanence, memory, and emotion. I use their allure to draw viewers close, then layer that beauty with quieter truths.
I grow flowers year-round. The garden is where I return to myself—hands in the soil, thoughts softening into silence. Gardening is a way of tending, both inward and outward. It allows me to reflect and process, just as painting does. My internal landscape often influences what emerges in the studio.
In this body of work, I imagine our inner selves as courtyards—spaces enclosed, yet open enough to let the outside in. Gardens within walls. Places shaped as much by what they hold as by what they release.
The gallery becomes a kind of courtyard itself. Paintings hung salon-style bloom across the walls like a layered abstract garden. Sculptural pieces, though seemingly solid, contain cutouts—hollows, openings, breathing spaces. An interplay between structure and freeform, between containment and expression.
Titles are essential. They offer an entry point into each piece, encouraging pause and contemplation—and sometimes humor and imagination. This connection allows each work to become more than an object.
It becomes a held space.
