The American Self-Taught genre, also called Outsider Art and Folk Art, is an intuitive, almost childlike form of expression. The artists are driven by an inborn need to create: they express their remembrances of the past, their religion, their patriotism, and their love of the land.
Because Outsider Art is non-academic, it was not readily accepted by the establishment. But in the last few decades Self-Taught art has moved from the margins to center stage, and is collected by the cognoscenti as fell as the casual discoverer. There are now dedicated museums, such as The Museum for American folk Art in New York and the American Museum of Visionary Art in Baltimore. In 1986 the National Museum of American Art acquired a 427 piece folk collection for 1.4 million dollars. Our own North Carolina Museum of Art produced in 1989 the landmark exhibition “Signs and Wonders: Outsider Art In North Carolina” which traveled to major museums and included a major catalog.
Many of the pieces in this collection are from Charlene Newsom’s personal collection, which she began in 1985, as well as from other discerning collectors.
