Bert Sult
Bert Sult is a North Carolina-based architect and watercolor artist who has established himself in both fields with remarkable versatility. As an architect, he designed many notable buildings in the Raleigh area, including Jones Chapel at Meredith College, the Raleigh Municipal Building and Complex, Cary Medical Center, and the Whitaker Center.
As a watercolorist, Bert Sult focuses on impressionistic watercolor street scenes from interesting locales, with particular emphasis on European subjects. Sult’s romantic portrayals of historic street scenes and buildings from Europe are executed in transparent, flowing watercolors, showcasing his mastery of this difficult and unpredictable medium. Like a modern-day Georgia O’Keeffe, Bert Sult loves to play with the fluidity of the medium.
Bert Sult’s style is loose and abstract-impressionistic, with a focus on the street rather than the explicit details of structures. When possible, he prefers painting en plein air directly at his subjects, though he also works from photographs. Bert’s approach typically involves creating graphite value sketches before executing the final watercolor painting.
Bert Sult has exhibited his work throughout the Raleigh area at venues including Christ Church Art Show, Gallery C, Nicole’s Fine Art, and the Roundabout Gallery. His paintings frequently feature favorite destinations such as London, Paris, and Rome, paying careful attention to the architectural character and atmospheric qualities of these historic cities.
