Where Sunlight Lingers by Gayle Stott Lowry

Where Sunlight Lingers by Gayle Stott Lowry

Feb 12th – Mar 21st, 2026
Opening Reception: Sunday, February 15, 1-3pm

Over fifty years of painting, and many years of studying the correlations between her life, dreams and creative work, Gayle Stott Lowry has garnered some understanding of her creative urges. Whether the subject has been figurative, architectural or landscape, her work has mirrored her life. Various themes have occurred and reoccurred over the years. Those familiar with her work sense the questioning, the mystery, the yearning, the progression from one place to another. The deep seated emotions she releases as she creates are then interpreted by the viewer, according to their own life experiences. We are all travelers at this particular time and place, each on their own journey.

Lowry’s innate curiosity, vigilance and desire for new experiences have resulted in her lifelong effort to experience other cultures, other vistas. Thus she has made travel a priority in her adult life, finding ways to travel inexpensively in order to refill her creative well and broaden her view of the world. She has always chosen locations where she knows she will find inspiration for a new body of work. These experiences have enriched her life in ways she had not imagined.

Her sense of well being and security at any particular time will dictate her travel choice. In times of security, she might take more risk, travel to a more challenging location to experience a remote, austere landscape such as Iceland, or an unknown culture such as Cuba or Morocco. When needing boundaries, she gravitates towards locations with the fortifications of historic architecture she is interested in investigating. The endurance of countries whose structures have withstood many centuries of invasions and change appeals to her as a proponent of historic preservation.

Last year the warmth and clarity of light in southern Italy appealed greatly to her, as did the clean air and brilliant blue skies of the coastal areas. The ancient limestone structures dating back thousands of years reflect their history, and radiate light, dignity and beauty. While there, she constantly observed the daily lives of the inhabitants, their deep respect for their history and culture, their priorities, and their attention to beauty. The slower pace of life in these quiet hillside towns with multiple generations living in close proximity offered an alternative lifestyle as she contemplates her own existence.

“The ability to look deeply is the root of creativity. To see past the ordinary and mundane and get to what might otherwise be invisible.” Rick Rubin
