Joseph was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended the University of Georgia between 1954-1958 where he majored in painting.

He was strongly influenced at this time by the Bay Area Figurative Painters although he chose landscapes as his predominate subject.
Joseph taught drawing and painting for two years at the Memphis Academy of Art and a further year at Southwestern in Memphis before moving to Northern California. This period is marked by paintings of the rocky Pacific coast as well as images of the wine country. Joseph and his family moved to Portugal in 1984 where they stayed for five years and during which time he painted the Portuguese rural landscape.
In 1989 he returned with his family to his native Southeast first settling in North Carolina and then moving to the South Carolina Coast. He currently resides in the mountains of North Carolina.
