Gallery C is pleased to present a series of carved and slip decorated earthernware plates ceramics by North Carolina native Will Hinton. The show consists of 60 original earthenware wall hangings that also are functional bowls that can sit on top of furniture. They are informed by the rural environment Hinton grew up in in Northeastern North Carolina in Gates County. They also are influenced by the ceramic tradition of 16th century Renaissance Majolica overglaze techniques, 17th century Japanese Oribe patterns, and spiraled patterns of the Mimbres Native Americans who lived from 725 to 1100 in what is today Southwest New Mexico. (Hinton spent several weeks this past summer studying these sites.)
Hinton is a well-known artist and educator. Now in his 38th year as Chair of the Art Department at Louisburg College, he is also the Curator of the two campus galleries.
The vessels are perfect for the gift giving season, so shop online or schedule a visit to pick up a few in person.
