The Life of Trees: The Art of Robin Hanes

The Life of Trees: The Art of Robin Hanes

Sep 20th – Oct 26th, 2014
Opening Reception: Friday, Oct 3rd, 6pm-9pm

Gallery C is pleased to present “The Life of Trees”, paintings by Robin Hanes. Hanes latest series has been six years in the making. Using a mandala form she paints the spiritual aspect of trees often with elaborate borders of wildlife. Working in gouache each work is a loving meditation.

A note from the artist, Robin Hanes, on this series of paintings:

My interest in trees started when I was a board member of Quality Forward, now Asheville Greenworks. We put together calendars using Benjamin Porter’s photos of Asheville trees for 5 years, starting 2003. The first group of these fine photos had a showing at Blue Spiral 1, a great benefit to our project.

I now spend a lot time working on tree issues and events in Charlottesville, with Tree Stewards, a group like Master Gardeners, but focused on trees. These activities include running the website; organizing an educational field trip for kids on Arbor Day , (including drawing with them); putting together a big fall sale of saplings (3-400!).  I don’t paint as quickly or as much as I used to. This series has been 6 years in the making.

I continue to paint elaborate borders, often with wildlife I observe in or near the trees. The borders show an added dimension to the subject’s life. I often choose the mandala form which lends a note of honor to these trees. This fits well because there’s truly a spiritual aspect to trees. It is a loving meditation to paint them. Architecture is a theme in some of these borders. trees inherently have a kind of architecture beyond human constructions. Plus they are nearly always a primary material in our buildings.
